📌 Welcome
The LGBTQ+ Media Mapping Project seeks to show the landscape of local LGBTQ+ media across the U.S.
The project is funded by the John T. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and is in partnership with the City University of New York’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism Center for Community Media. Local Media Foundation is the host organization overseeing the research and final report. LMA is also the sponsor of the News Is Out LGBTQ+ media collaborative.
The main emphasis of this research has been on local LGBTQ+ media. We did a separate survey of national LGBTQ+ media and those results are also included in our final report, but the mapping portion is for local media—because national media serve a nationwide audience.
This project was launched by Tracy Baim. Hanna Siemaszko was lead researcher on this project. Penny Riordan of Local Media Foundation was the project supervisor. Jennifer Cheng created the map.

🗺️ How to use the map
Each marker on the map represents a city or town. Select a marker to see the outlet(s) at that location. Markers are placed near the geographic center of each city or town and do not indicate the exact location of any outlet. To better see the media outlet options, please zoom in by double-clicking or double-tapping the map or using the zoom controls in the lower right corner.
- Numbered markers show how many outlets are based in that location.
- Markers without numbers represent a single outlet.
Marker colors indicate audience reach:
- Green: City or region-wide reach.
- Orange: Statewide reach.
Use the dropdown menu in the top right corner of the map to view the states with LGBTQ+ media outlets, including Hawaii, beyond the contiguous states. If a state is selected, the map will then zoom in to the state. As before, select a marker to see the outlet(s) at that location.
📍 Add your outlet
We will update this map with new media outlets, and ones that close. Send changes to: newsisout@localmedia.org
